No Longer In Production.
This model is no longer in production. The current model is the TRT TIDD PC28-3G
28 Tonnes. Proven in the Field.
Serious lift and shift capacity in a machine with a long track record behind it.
The TIDD PC28 is no longer in production, but secondhand units are available from time to time.
At 28 tonnes on the fixed lug, 2.5 metres wide, with a ROPS-certified cabin and a 2.3 tonne roadable counterweight, it delivers the same lift and shift capability the TIDD range was built on. TRT stocks genuine OEM parts and maintains an authorised service network across New Zealand and Australia, so support is there for the life of the machine.
The PC28 was built around three things: genuine lift capacity, safe pick and carry operation, and the ability to get into sites where larger equipment stops. Those fundamentals do not change on a secondhand machine.
TRT continues to support every PC28 in the field with parts, service, and technical expertise.
-
Full Power Boom
High-tensile steel construction, fully synchronised lower sections, and independent operation of section three give the PC28 boom precise reach and strong performance across its full 75% stationary and 66% pick and carry charts.
-
Lift and Shift Capacity
At 28 tonnes on the fixed lug and 25 tonnes pick and carry on the second lug, the PC28 handles serious loads across a wide range of configurations. Switching from stationary to pick and carry is as simple as releasing the hold brake. The optional 1.1 tonne Superlift counterweight adds further capacity on both charts.
-
Roadable Counterweight
The 2.3 tonne counterweight roads with the crane as standard, mounting to both front and rear. No support vehicle is required between sites. At 12 tonnes per axle including the counterweight, the PC28 meets NSW road requirements without additional permits or an IAP.
-
Site Access and Manoeuvrability
At 2.5 metres wide with 44 degrees of articulation either side of centre, the PC28 gets into sites that rule out larger configurations. TRT designed this machine with the shortest forward projection in its class and an outstanding turning radius, which means tight industrial sites, constrained access corridors, and indoor lift scenarios all stay in scope.
-
ROPS Cabin
The forward-mounted cabin is certified to ROPS standard with a two-person configuration and double door access. Two 150kg-rated air suspension seats, 3-point safety belts, and ducted air conditioning keep operators comfortable and protected across long shifts. The hinged cabin steps open into a large dry storage area, practical for soft slings and rigging gear.
-
Mercedes Benz Drivetrain
The Mercedes Benz OM906 six-cylinder 6.4 litre turbocharged diesel delivers 205kW through an Allison World Series 3000 automatic transmission, matched to a Meritor transfer case to optimise driveline angles. Kessler high-speed planetary axles with a front axle diff lock complete the package.
This is a well-supported drivetrain across New Zealand and Australia, which keeps maintenance predictable and parts sourcing straightforward over the life of the machine.
Built to Perform.
At 28 tonnes capacity and 2.5 metres wide, the PC28 was built to get into the sites where heavier equipment stops.
The 75% stationary chart and 66% pick and carry chart hold across the full boom range.
Genuine OEM parts are available and the authorised service network covers New Zealand and Australia.
Safety at the Centre of Everything
The PC28-2 carries the full TIDD safety package as standard. Slew Safe, the LMI bridging switch, ROPS certification, and ABS braking are not options or upgrades. They are how this crane leaves the factory.
-
Slew Safe
Available as a recommended fitment on the PC28. Slew Safe monitors load conditions in real time and reduces steering speed in the unsafe direction when the crane approaches an overload zone, giving the operator audible and physical feedback before a situation becomes a rollover. Australian Innovation Patent No. 2019100317.
-
Superlift Counterweight
The optional 1.1 tonne Superlift counterweight fits to the base of the 2.3 tonne roadable counterweight and adds up to 12% additional capacity across both the stationary and pick and carry charts. At under 3.5 tonnes combined, it can be transported to site under a car licence. Fast to set up, with an operator-friendly loading system using the crane itself.
-
Traction Air
The optional Traction Air central tyre inflation system maintains 130PSI across all front and rear tyres from a touchscreen inside the cab. Consistent tyre pressure creates a stable lift platform and removes manual pressure checks from the start-of-day routine. Exclusive to the TIDD PC28 range. Backed by a 3-year / 500,000km warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
The PC28 is no longer in production. Is it still worth considering?
Yes, for the right buyer. The PC28 delivers 28 tonnes on the fixed lug, 25 tonnes pick and carry, a 2.5 metre footprint, 44 degrees of articulation, and a ROPS-certified cabin. Those are the same core specifications the TIDD range was built on, and they hold on a secondhand machine.
TRT still stocks genuine OEM parts and maintains an authorised service network across New Zealand and Australia. The machine is fully supportable for the long term.
For an owner-operator or fleet buyer who wants proven TIDD performance at a secondhand price point, the PC28 is a legitimate option. The current production model is the PC28-3G if you want to compare what has changed across generations.
-
Does the PC28 have Slew Safe?
Slew Safe is available on the PC28 as a recommended fitment, rather than a standard factory inclusion as it is on the PC28-2 and PC28-3G. When fitted, it monitors load conditions in real time and reduces steering speed in the unsafe direction when the crane approaches an overload zone, giving the operator audible and physical feedback before a situation becomes a rollover.
When evaluating a secondhand PC28, confirming whether Slew Safe is fitted should be one of the first questions. TRT can advise on retrofitting for units that do not have it.
For fleet owners and safety managers, the answer to that question changes how the machine is assessed.
-
What are the lift charts and how does the roadable counterweight work on the road?
The PC28 runs a 75% stationary chart and a 66% pick and carry chart, the same as the PC28-2. At 28 tonnes on the fixed lug, 27.6 tonnes on the running rope, and 25 tonnes pick and carry on the second lug, the capacity figures are unchanged from the subsequent models.
The 2.3 tonne counterweight mounts to both the front and rear of the crane and roads with it as standard. At 12 tonnes per axle including the counterweight, the PC28 meets NSW road requirements without additional permits or an IAP.
For operators moving regularly between sites, that roadability without a support vehicle or additional permit overhead is a genuine operational advantage.
-
How does the PC28 handle site access compared to larger cranes?
At 2.5 metres wide with 44 degrees of articulation either side of centre, the PC28 was designed with the shortest forward projection in its class and an outstanding turning radius. That combination means tight industrial sites, constrained access corridors, and indoor lift scenarios all remain in scope.
It gets into sites where larger configurations stop entirely. The four-section full power boom extends from 6.12 to 18.65 metres with high-tensile steel construction, giving the reach to work once the machine is positioned.
For operations where access is the primary constraint, the PC28's footprint is still one of the most competitive in its class.
-
What optional upgrades are available on the PC28?
Two options are available: the Superlift counterweight and Traction Air.
The Superlift is a 1.1 tonne counterweight that fits to the base of the standard 2.3 tonne unit and adds up to 12% additional capacity across both the stationary and pick and carry charts. Combined weight stays under 3.5 tonnes, meaning it can be transported to site under a car licence. It sets up quickly using the crane itself.
Traction Air is TRT's central tyre inflation system, maintaining 130 PSI across all tyres from a touchscreen inside the cab. It creates a stable lift platform and removes manual tyre pressure checks from the daily routine. It is exclusive to the TIDD PC28 range and backed by a 3-year / 500,000 km warranty.
For a secondhand unit, confirm with the seller or TRT whether either option is currently fitted.
-
What should I check when evaluating a secondhand PC28?
Start with the service history. The PC28 runs a 100-hour first service and 250-hour scheduled services after that. A unit with documented service history at an authorised TIDD agent gives you confidence the machine has been maintained to the correct standard.
Confirm whether Slew Safe is fitted. On a secondhand unit it may or may not be installed, and that is a safety and compliance consideration before the machine goes to work.
TRT can assist with condition assessment, service history review, and any retrofit or compliance requirements for a specific unit. Contact the TRT crane team before committing to a purchase.
-
What parts and service support is available for the PC28?
TRT manufactured the PC28 and continues to stock genuine OEM parts for every unit in the field. Because every component in the machine is an industry-standard crane or construction part, sourcing is straightforward and there are no proprietary dead ends over the life of the machine.
All major servicing is carried out by authorised TIDD service agents across New Zealand and Australia. TRT can arrange fast freight on parts to minimise downtime when a machine needs attention.
For a secondhand purchase, TRT can also discuss service history, current condition, and the specific support available for a particular unit. Contact the TRT crane team directly.
